The Dreilinieneule ( Charanyca trigrammica ), also known as Yellow Waldgraseule, is a butterfly (moth ) from the family of cutworms ( Noctuidae ).

Features

Butterfly

With a wingspan 29-38 mm are the moths of the medium sized owl butterflies. The forewings have a from yellow to beige and gray to reddish brown varying color. Characteristic are three dark transverse lines, the nearly straight. Sometimes, the middle line is very indistinct. For single copies also all lines may be missing. Flaws can not be seen normally. The hind wings are gray-brown or the color of the forewings. The antennae of male moths are serrated, those of the females are thready.

Egg

The spherical egg is strongly flattened at the base and has strong ribs, of which only about half reached the Pole. It is of a yellowish white color.

Caterpillar

The caterpillar is stocky, gray to reddish colored, with many point warts as well as some short hair and shows a bright, broken back line. The spiracles are outlined in black and white. The front portion tapering towards the small head.

Geographical distribution and habitat

The Dreilinieneule occurs in almost all of Europe. There are also deposits in Asia Minor and the Caucasus. In the mountains, they can still be found at altitudes of 1000 meters. It prefers rich shrubbery forest edges, clearings, cultural landscapes and semi- dry grasslands, but is also found on wet meadows.

Way of life

The moths fly univoltine May to July. They are crepuscular and nocturnal. Occasionally they suck at flowers, for example, to those of butterfly bush ( Buddleja davidii ), Meadow Sage ( Salvia pratensis) or scabious ( knautia ). Visit and artificial light sources. The caterpillars live on or in the soil and are usually covered with small lumps of earth that readily adhere to their warty structure. They feed preferentially from plantain ( Plantago lanceolata), plantain ( Plantago major), Middle plantain ( Plantago media ), sorrel ( Rumex ), dandelion (Taraxacum ), deadnettles ( Lamium ) and other low plants. They live from July, overwinter and pupate in April of the following year.

The Dreilinieneule occurs in Germany in all provinces and is classified on the red list of threatened species as not at risk.
