Charles Amarin Brand

Charles Amarin Brand ( * June 27, 1920 in Mulhouse, Alsace, † March 31, 2013 in Toulouse ) was a French theologian. From 1981 to 1984 he was archbishop of Monaco and then to 1997, archbishop of Strasbourg.

Life

Brand was born in southern Alsace in Mulhouse. He received his priestly ordination in 1943 in Clermont- Ferrand on behalf of the Diocese of Strasbourg. After receiving his doctorate in theology and a degree in philosophy, he became in 1946 secretary to the Bishop Auguste -Joseph Gaudel of Fréjus -Toulon. At the same time he assumed the duties of a military chaplain true in Frejus. In 1955 he became vicar general in the diocese.

Pope Paul VI. December 28, 1971 appointed him titular bishop of Uthina as well as Auxiliary Bishop of Fréjus -Toulon and gave him on 13 February 1972 at St. Peter's Episcopal ordination; Co-consecrators were Bernard Cardinal Alfrink January, Archbishop of Utrecht and William John Cardinal Conway, Archbishop of Armagh, Ireland. In 1976 he became auxiliary bishop in his home diocese of Strasbourg.

On July 31, 1981, Pope John Paul II appointed Archbishop of Monaco. In this role, he led the funeral service at the funeral of Grace Kelly. Finally, he was appointed by John Paul II as Bishop of Strasbourg on 16 July 1984, but was allowed to keep his rank as archbishop as a personal item. He became a member and later the President of the Commission of the Bishops ' Conferences of the European Community ( COMECE).

During a visit to Strasbourg, Pope John Paul II on October 8, 1988, the diocese to the rank of archbishopric. After the consecration of his successor Joseph Doré on 23 November 1997 at the Strasbourg Cathedral fire went into retirement.
