Charles de Valois, Duke of Angoulême

Charles de Valois (* April 28, 1573 at Castle Le Fayet at Barraux, † September 24, 1650 in Paris) was a member of the Valois family, Duke of Auvergne and Duke of Angoulême.

Life

Charles was born out of wedlock son of Charles IX. and his mistress Marie Touchet. He first bore the title of Count of Auvergne and in 1580 Grand Prior of France. From 1588 ( to 1589 ) and a second time in 1618 ( until 1618) he was colonel général of the light cavalry.

Although Charles IV was considered as followers of Henry, but was in 1601, jailed because of a conspiracy, in which he was involved, together with the dukes of Savoy, Biron and Bouillon for several months. The aim was to marry the king with Charles ' half-sister Catherine Henriette de Balzac d' Entragues.

Because of conspiring with Philip II of Spain against the Crown in 1605, he was sentenced to death, commuted to life imprisonment in 1616 and finally released.

Under Louis XIII. he besieged in 1617 Soissons, in 1619 he was raised to Herzog_von_Penthièvre and 1620 to the Duke of Angoulême, in 1620 went as envoy to the Emperor Ferdinand II, commanded in 1628 in La Rochelle and fought with distinction in the Languedoc and in Germany and Flanders. In 1635 he was General of the French Army, one year later lieutenant general.

Progeny

Charles was in his first marriage since 1591 Charlotte de Montmorency ( 1572-1636 ), Countess of de Fleix, daughter of Henri I de Montmorency (master list of Montmorency ) married, with whom he had the following children:

  • Henri (1594-1668), Count of Lauragais, disinherited 1609
  • Louis -Emmanuel (1596-1653), Duke of Angoulême, ∞ Henriette de La Guiche 1629
  • François (1598-1622), Count of Alais, ∞ 1622 Louise Henriette de La Chatre

His second wife was married in 1644 to Françoise de Nargonne ( 1622-1713 ). He left further two daughters born out of wedlock with Isabelle de Crecy.
