Charles Deering

Charles Deering ( born July 31, 1852 in South Paris, Maine; † February 5, 1927 in Miami, Florida ) was an American industrialist and art patron.

His father William Deering (1826-1913) founded the Deering Harvester Company in Illinois. Charles Deering graduated in 1873 at the United States Naval Academy and served until 1881 as a naval officer, he joined the family business. In 1883 he married Marrion Whipple. The couple had three children. In 1902 it came under the patronage of JP Morgan for the fusion of Deering Harvester with the founded by Cyrus McCormick farm equipment companies and others to International Harvester Company. Charles Deering became CEO.

Deering was also a lover of art. In 1910 he was the Palau Maricel built in Sitges, near Barcelona. The artist Miquel Utrillo i Morlius worked with it. A second, adjacent building was also purchased by Deering. There is now the Museu Maricel -based. Deerings winter residence in Miami, Florida is also now a museum and nature reserve .. It is located in the neighborhood of Villa Vizcaya his half-brother James Deering ( 1859-1925 ).

1930-33 was built with donations from the family Deering Library at Northwestern University in Evanston (Illinois ).
