William Deering

William Deering ( born April 25, 1826 in South Paris, Maine; † 9 December 1913 in Coconut Grove, Florida ) was an American industrialist.

Deering left his birthplace in Maine in 1850 and invested his inheritance in western farmland in Illinois and Iowa In 1870 he entered into a partnership with Elijah Gammon one, had the manufacturing rights for a horse-drawn harvester. The partners built a factory in Plano (Illinois ). The company introduced an important technical innovations due to the inventions of John Appleby. 1902 there was a major merger with the International Harvester Company.

William Deering was active in his later years as a patron and promoted inter alia, Northwestern University, Garrett - Evangelical Theological Seminary, and the Wesley Hospital. He was the father of Charles Deering (1852-1927) and James Deering ( 1859-1925 ).
