Charles Knapp (congressman)

Charles Knapp ( born October 8, 1797 in Colchester, New York, † May 14 1880 in Deposit, New York ) was an American politician. Between 1869 and 1871 he represented the State of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives. Congressman Charles J. Knapp was his son.

Career

Charles Knapp was first taught at home and later attended community schools. He then worked in agriculture. He taught at a school in Delaware County. In 1825 he went to commercial transactions. He sat in 1841 in the New York State Assembly. In 1848 he moved to Deposit in Delaware County, where he founded a bank in 1854, of which he was the president then. Politically, he was a member of the Republican Party.

In the congressional elections of 1868 for the 41st Congress Fields was in the 19th electoral district of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of William C. Fields on March 4, 1869. Since he gave up for reelection in 1870, he retired after March 3, 1871 from the Congress.

After his conference time he went back to his bank activity. On 14 May 1880 he died in Deposit and was then buried in the Laurel Bank Cemetery.
