Charles Lefebvre-Desnouettes

Charles Lefebvre Desnouettes -, rare Charles Lefebvre - Desnoettes ( born September 14, 1773 in Paris, † May 22, 1822 on the coast of Ireland, Shipwreck ) was a French cavalry general.

Life

1792 Lefebvre - Desnouettes came into the army and served until the northern army, and later in the Army of the Rhine. After the first carriage he was appointed in 1798 to the aide- de-camp of Napoleon and as such he fought among others at Marengo (14 June 1800).

After subsequent promotions he could be distinguished by bravery in Elchingen (14 October 1805) and Austerlitz (December 2, 1805). The following year, he was seen already as a general and as such he was summoned to Spain to enforce the Napoleonic interests.

Lefebvre - Desnouettes was 1808 - in addition to Bon -Adrien Jeannot de - Moncey and Jean -Antoine Verdier - participated in the siege of Saragossa. He fought at Benavente (December 29, 1808) and fell while British forces under Henry William Paget in his hands. As an official prisoner of war Lefebvre - Desnouettes was brought to the UK and spent two years at Cheltenham ( Gloucestershire ). In 1811 he broke his parole and fled back to France.

In 1812 he took part in Napoleon's Russian campaign and fought bravely at Borodino (7 September 1812) and on the Berezina ( 26-28. November 1812 ).

In the battles of Brienne (29 January 1814), La Rothière (1 February 1814), Montmirail (11 February 1814), Vauchamps (14 February 1814) and Arcis- sur -Aube ( 20-21. March 1814 ) Lefebvre - Desnouette could in turn be characterized by courage and bravery.

When Napoleon had left Elba and the " rule of the Hundred Days " began to Lefebvre - Desnouette closed immediately to the Emperor and led a cavalry division. With this he participated, among others, the battles of Quatre Bras (16 June 1815) and at the Battle of Waterloo (18 June 1815).

During the Restoration Lefebvre - Desnouettes was accused of being a favorite of Napoleon and sentenced to death. But he could flee to the USA and lived there from 1817 onwards for several years at the Société de la coloniale étroit et de l' olivier in Alabama; was founded by and for French Bonapartist in exile, like the Champ d' Asile by François Antoine Lallemand.

Many a time did Lefebvre - Desnouettes King Louis XVIII. Send petitions and devotion addresses. His return uncertain, he sold his property in 1821, Château des Nouettes, the writer Sophie de Ségur. In the spring of 1822 he was assured impunity and a return to France allowed. Lefebvre - Desnouette sailed on the ship " Albion " towards Europe, but suffered on 22 May 1822 the coast of Ireland shipwreck in which nearly sank the entire Besatzumg. His body was never found.

To commemorate him and to all who died with him, leaving his widow on a hill in Sainte-Adresse ( now a suburb of Le Havre ) on the Rue Charles Alexandre Lesueur a cenotaph ( obelisk ) build; popularly called Pain de Sucre.
