Charles McDonald (Irish politician)

Charles " Charlie" McDonald ( born June 11, 1935 in Ballyroan, County Laois ) is a former Irish politician of the Fine Gael.

McDonald was a farmer by profession. In 1961 he was first elected as a member of the Senate ( Seanad Eireann ) and represented in this until 1973, the interest for Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, called the Agricultural panel. In 1969, he ran as a candidate of the Fine Gael unsuccessfully in constituency Laoighis - Offaly for a deputy seat in the lower house ( Dáil Éireann ).

In 1973 he was elected not only in the constituency Laoighis - Offaly to Abegeordneten in the House, but also in January 1973 and March 1973 Member of the European Parliament, where he served until 1979. In the election to the 21st Dáil Éireann in 1977, although he suffered a defeat and resigned from the House of, he was elected shortly thereafter as a representative of the Agricultural Panel reappointed as a member of the Senate and belonged to this until 1992. When the first European elections in 1979 he was a candidate in the constituency of Leinster unsuccessfully for a seat in the European Parliament.

After he was on 18 July 1979 to August 11, 1981 Vice- President of the Senate ( Leas Cathaoirleach ), he was born on October 8, 1981 Cathaoirleach and thus Senate President. This office he held until May 13, 1982. Afterwards, he was again between May 19 1982 and January 30, 1983 Vice- President of the Senate.

In the elections to Dáil Éireann in 1981, February and November 1982, and in 1987 he ran again unsuccessfully in constituency Laoighis - Offaly for a deputy seat in the House. He was most recently on May 20, 1987 to August 15, again in 1989 as Leas Cathaoirleach Vice- President of the Senate.

His subsequent candidacy in the 1989 European elections in the constituency of Leinster was as unsuccessful as his applications for re-election as a member of the Senate in 1993 and 1997.
