Charles of Artois, Count of Eu

Charles d' Artois (* probably the beginning of 1394, † July 25, 1472 ) was from 1397, Count of Eu, Seigneur de Saint -Valery and Houdain. He was the son of Philippe d' Artois and Marie de Berry, Duchess of Auvergne, and thus a grandson of Jean de Valois, duc de Berry.

Even as a 3 -year-old he inherited from his father the county Eu. As a 21 -year-old in 1415 he took part in the Battle of Agincourt, in which he was captured by the British. It took 23 years to 1438 free again left him, now 44 years old. He was deputy ( Lieutenant) of the king in Normandy and Guyenne in 1465 and with about 70 years still governor of Paris.

Ten years after his release in 1448 he married Jeanne de saveuse who died on in the year. On September 23, 1454, he came in with Hélène de Melun, daughter of Jean IV de Melun, Viscount of Ghent, a second marriage. It is not surprising that both marriages were childless. Charles died on 25 July 1472 his wife almost to the day exactly one year later, on July 29, 1473rd All three, Charles, Jeanne and Hélène were buried in the Abbey of Eu.

His successor in the county of Eu was his nephew, Count Johann II of Nevers and Rethel, son of his sister, Bonne d' Artois from her first marriage with Count Philip II of Nevers.
