Charles Previn

Charles Previn ( born January 11, 1888 in Brooklyn, New York, † September 22, 1973 in Hollywood, California ) was an American film composer, music director and conductor.

Life

Previn grew up the son of an immigrant family. After completing his Bachelor of Cornell University in 1910, he obtained a master on the New York College of Music. From 1915 he worked as musical director on Broadway, after which he worked as a conductor for NBC radio. Between 1936 and 1944 he was music director at Universal Studios. In addition to the musical line composed, arranged and conducted film music. He contributed occasionally also in film songs. From 1945 to 1947 he was the successor of Erno Rapée music director and conductor of the Radio City Music Hall in Manhattan. After he returned to Hollywood and even worked for several years in the film business before he retired in 1953.

Previn was a distant relative of the conductor, composer and Oscar-winning film composer André Previn.
