Charles Scriver

Charles Robert Scriver ( born November 7, 1930 in Montreal ) is a Canadian pediatrician and geneticist.

Life

Charles Scrivers parents were both doctors. His mother was one of the first crop, were allowed to study medicine in the women at McGill University in Montreal.

Scriver acquired in 1951 from McGill University and a bachelor's degree in 1955 MDCM (comparable to the MD) graduation from medical school. He worked as a medical assistant at McGill University and Harvard University before he went as a research assistant to Charles Dent and Harry Harris to London in 1958. 1961 moved Scriver back to McGill University, where he founded the Laboratory of Biochemical Genetics Debelle, a research facility of the Montreal Children 's Hospital at McGill University Health Centre. In 1969 he became Professor of Pediatrics, 1978, in addition to human genetics. Most recently, he additionally had held professorships biochemistry and biology. 2009 Scriver retired.

Scriver is married to Esther Pierce since 1956. The couple has four children.

Work

Scriver has contributed significantly to the detection and treatment of inborn errors of metabolism. Early work Scrivers dealt mainly with transport systems for amino acids and phosphates as well as the hereditary diseases caused by disorders of these systems. Later he obtained the fortification of dairy products with vitamin D to prevent rickets in Canada and installed programs for the early detection of phenylketonuria and other inborn errors of metabolism in newborns ( neonatal screening). Other works focus on the population genetics of Canada and bioinformatics.
