Charles Stourton, 26th Baron Mowbray

Charles Edward Stourton, 23rd Baron Stourton, 27th Baron Segrave, 26th Baron Mowbray CBE (* March 11, 1923; † 12 December 2006) was a baron of the English nobility. From 1965 to 1983 he was the highest-ranking baron in the country. He sat as a peer for the Conservative Party in the House of Lords and was a conservative Whip the government and the opposition from 1967 to 1980. He was one of 92 Erbadeligen, who were elected at the launch of the House of Lords Act 1999, to retain her seat.

Family

Mowbray was the eldest son of William Marmaduke Stourton, 25th Lord Mowbray, Segrave 26 Lord Lord Stourton and 22. His mother, Sheila Gully, was a granddaughter of William Court Gully, 1st Viscount Selby, who was 1895 to 1905 Speaker of the House of Commons.

Education and military service

He went to Ampleforth College and Christ Church, Oxford, and served during the Second World War as a lieutenant in the Grenadier Guards. He was wounded near Caen in 1944 and thereby lost his right eye. He left the Army in 1945 and led a pig farm on the family estate in Yorkshire.

Marriage and children

He was married twice. He married in 1953 his first wife Jane de Yarburgh - Bateson. She was the only child of Stephen Nicholas de Yarburgh - Bateson, 5th Baron Deramore. The couple had two sons:

  • Edward William Stephen Stourton, 27th Baron Mowbray ( born April 17, 1953)
  • Hon James Stourton Alastair ( born July 3, 1956)

His wife died in 1998, and in 1999 he married his second wife Joan, Lady Holland, born Street, widow of Sir Guy Holland, 3rd Baronet.

Political career

He was Goldstick Officer at the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953. Between 1954 and 1959 he was council in Nidderdale Rural District Council.

Despite his Roman Catholic faith, he took his mother's side when his parents divorced in 1961, caught a case of a stir. His father was portrayed as self-centered, and his mother received the judicial separation because of its cruelty. After the divorce, he sued his father because of a dispute over the management of the family land Sitztes, which was settled by it.

He inherited three Baron title when his father died in 1965. Baron Mowbray is the third highest Barony in England, after the Baron de Ros Baron le Despencer and. But because Georgiana Maxwell, 27th Baroness de Ros was female and the Baron le Despencer also Viscount Falmouth was, he succeeded his father as the highest-ranking baron of England, died to 1983 Baroness de Ros, and was succeeded by her son. His father bequeathed a large part of the estate of his 12 - year-old grandson, Edward William Stephen Stourton, 27th Baron Mowbray, with little shares for his wife and his son. The family estate of Allerton Park, near Knaresborough in Yorkshire is one of the most important Gothic Revival building in Britain and was bequeathed to a trust until Edward reached the age of 30. The house was established in 1983 and an American businessman leased.

He was by his eye patch on the Conservative benches easily recognizable and has rarely left the Conservative Party line. It was founded in 1967 Whip of the opposition and performed this task for 13 years until he resigned in 1980. He was on the Committee of Privileges and was captain of the shooting team of the House of Lords.

He was a member of several clubs and societies. He was Vice- President of the British Association of the Sovereign Order of Malta, and was also the longest serving knight. He was 1975-2000 President and CEO of the British and Irish Association of Constantine Order under their Grand Master, the Duke of Castro.

In the 1960s he became the director of Securicor. He was also from 1993 Chairman of the Thames Estuary Airport Company.
