Charles Webster Leadbeater

Charles Webster Leadbeater ( born February 17, 1847 in Stockport, United Kingdom, † March 1, 1934 in Perth, Australia) was a priest, a Theosophist and occultist.

Became famous Charles W. Leadbeater as Jiddu Krishnamurti propagator as a born-again Christ. Beginning of the 20th century, he was one of the leading ideologues of the Theosophical Society and a world-renowned clairvoyant and occultist. Since 1916 he was bishop of the Liberal Catholic Church.

Life

Leadbeater was born into a wealthy family. Early on, he lost brother and father. When the family in a bank failure lost their fortunes, Charles Leadbeater was forced to work. He worked in the 1870s as a teacher. On 21 December 1879 he was ordained a priest of the Church of England.

At this time he was very interested in astronomy and increasingly for spiritualism and clairvoyance. He participated in seances in London and met spiritual mediums. In this environment, he came up with Theosophy in contact first about Alfred Percy Sinnett's book, The Occult World. On November 21, 1883, he joined the Theosophical Society.

On November 4, 1884, he left his parish and set out toward India. Preceded by the was the acquaintance with Helena Petrovna Blavatsky and months of fruitless efforts to contact the so-called " masters " (Masters of Wisdom) to produce. After it announced Blavatsky, one evening, that the "master " had received his letter, he took on the morning of October 31, 1884 a first response letter, suggesting him to leave England. The next night he already received a second letter from the " master ", who urged piece departure.

In Adyar, he was several times on an interim basis since 1885 as editor of The Theosophist, and spent his time primarily to the acquisition allegedly clairvoyant abilities. In 1886 he visited with Blavatsky Ceylon, where he settled as an assistant to Henry Steel Olcott. There he participated in the activities until 1888 Olcott to " Buddhist Renewal" and known to Buddhism, but without renounce his Anglican faith.

In the following years he developed through occult studies, which he pursued with Annie Besant and Others, and a corresponding publication activity to one of the most prominent Theosophists. In 1906 he had to withdraw from all but functions because he was attacked because of his public recommendation to masturbation and the presence of students in his travel companion as a gay pedophile. The Theosophical Society was at odds to the Leadbeater scandal, while eg Sinnett defended him, Annie Besant and Colonel Olcott distanced.

However, from 1907, when Annie Besant became President of the Theosophical Society, they ran the rehabilitation Leadbeater. In February 1909 he reached Adyar. Two months later, the boy Krishna ( Jiddu Krishnamurti ) and Nitya fell on him. He began to study them clairvoyantly and to take into his care. The boys received from him and, increasingly, by Annie Besant English education. Beginning of 1911 were brought to Europe for further training, while at the same time began the newly founded Order of the Star in the East, Krishna to propagate as a coming World Teacher, di reincarnated Buddha or Christ, Krishna and Nitya. Krishnamurti turned gradually from his former mentor from, who turned in the following years new activities. So Leadbeater traveled to Australia and became involved in Freemasonry. The use Annie Besant and other theosophists for Indian self-government rejected the pro-imperialist Leadbeater.

In 1915 he moved to Sydney. On July 22, Leadbeater was ordained bishop of the Liberal Catholic Church. In the following years he worked together with his colleague James Wedgwood the liturgy, which had taken over their church from the Old Catholic Church in order. Its activity also polarized in Australia. The anti-clerical majority of the local Theosophical Society turned in 1922 under the slogan " Back to Blavatsky " against Leadbeater and Besant and split from the parent company in Adyar from.
