Charlie Shavers

Charlie James Shavers ( born August 3, 1917 in New York City; † July 8th, 1971 ebenada ) was a jazz trumpeter from the time of swing.

Biography

The first instruments that played Shavers, were piano and banjo, later he switched to trumpet about. As a pianist he performed in Tilly 's Chicken Shack in Harlem, on the banjo, he plays with Bobby Hackett. At 18, he joined the band in 1935 Tiny Bradshaw on, in 1937, he went to Lucky Millinder, and finally to John Kirby's band, where he replaced Frankie Newton. The band, which occurred in the Onyx Club and therefore Onyx Club Boys was called, enjoyed great success as a swing band in smaller ensembles. Incidentally graduated Shavers appearances with Johnny Dodds, Jimmy Noone and Sidney Bechet. Shavers now also arranged pieces for Kirby and made his own composition Undecided to be a hit.

In 1944 he returned Kirby's band back, played one year at Raymond Scott and then joined the orchestra of Tommy Dorsey. In addition, he recorded with the Metronome All-Stars and toured with Jazz at the Philharmonic. After Dorsey had died in 1956, located Shavers devoted primarily his own band; In 1957, as an album with singer Maxine Sullivan. In 1963 he takes part in a re- formation of the Dorsey Orchestra, which was led by Sam Donahue. In the late 1960s he had his own quartet with Budd Johnson.

After Digby Fairweather Shavers was one of the best swing trumpeter; technical brilliance, fast tempos, linear melodic and often funny -looking articulation gave his style a personal touch. Richard Cook and Brian Morton emphasize his sense of humor and be " intense feeling " for the history of jazz.

On July 8, 1971 Charlie Shavers died in New York at the age of 53 years to cancer. He died two days after Louis Armstrong; Shavers ' mouthpiece was settled its coffin.
