Tommy Bryant

Tommy Bryant ( born May 21, 1930 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, † January 3, 1982 ) was an American jazz bassist and pop singer.

Life and work

Tommy Bryant was the brother of Ray Bryant. He learned to play the double bass at age 12 and played with Red Nichols and with Elmer Snowden ( 1949-52 ) before he was called up for military service ( 1956). He then worked with a private Trio ( 1957), in Jo Jones Trio ( 1958) and with Charlie Shavers (1959). In addition, Bryant was on recordings with Roy Eldridge; Dizzy Gillespie, Barney Wilen, Big Joe Turner and Coleman Hawkins involved. In the last 10 years of his life he often worked in a sequel, the Ink Spots, which was led by Bernie Mackey and which included Able De Costa and Bill Godwin. On his numerous recordings with Mahalia Jackson, he was listed as Tom Bryant.
