Cheiridopsis aspera

Cheiridopsis is a plant genus of the family of Mesembryanthemum plants ( Aizoaceae ). The botanical name is derived from the Greek words for cheiris, vagina ' and - opsis for similar ' and refers to the paper-like sheaths, which are formed during the rest period.

Description

The species of the genus Cheiridopsis grow up as a compact lawn -like, rarely branched little plants or mat -forming. Their sheaths are persistent, the keeled leaves are edged up three triangular and rounded at their base. Sometimes the leaf margin or the keel are perforated. Your epidermis is papillate.

The individual flowers carry bracts. There are four or five sepals present. The petals are yellow or off-white, rarely purple orange or red. They are often tinged with purple. The fragrant flowers open at midday and close at sunset. Flowering period extends from April to October.

The fruit capsules have 10 to 20 subjects. They contain flat to round, light brown and smooth or darker and papillary seeds.

Systematics and distribution

The distribution of the genus Cheiridopsis extends south of Lüderitz in Namibia through Namaqualand and in the western and central regions of the Western Cape in South Africa. The species grow mainly in the winter rainfall areas.

The first description by Nicholas Edward Brown was published in 1925. The type species is Cheiridopsis rostrata. The genus Cheiridopsis is divided into three sub-genera and includes the following types:
