Chen Zhu

Chen Zhu (Chinese陈竺; * August 17, 1953 in Shanghai) is a Chinese hematologist, molecular biologist and Minister of Health of the People's Republic of China. He holds a professorship at the School of Medicine, Jiaotong University in Shanghai.

Biography

Chen Zhu was born on August 17, 1953 in Shanghai, the hometown of his ancestors is Zhenjiang in Jiangsu Province. In September 1981, he earned his master's degree from Shanghai Jiaotong University. After completing his doctorate at the University of Paris -Diderot, he completed his medical training and post- doctoral studies at his university hospital.

Chen was president of the Institute of Hematology and Director General of the China Human Genome Center (South ), Shanghai. In 2007, he became vice president of the Chinese Academy of Sciences ( CAS). By 2010, he is the only minister of the People's Republic of China without political or party affiliation.

With his wife Chen Saijuan, also a student of Zhen - Yi Wang and hematologist, he has a son.

Honors and Awards

In addition to membership as an academic at the Chinese Academy of Sciences Chen is a foreign member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, the French Academy of Sciences and the U.S. Institute of Medicine. He is also a member of the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World and the European Academy of Arts and Sciences.

He was awarded by the Chinese Government of the State Scientific and Technological Award. He was the first non - French winner of the Prix de l' Qise France's La Ligue contre le cancer national.

In 2002 he received the Order of the Legion of Honour by the French government. He received an honorary Doctor of Science from the University of Hong Kong was awarded in 2005.
