Cheon Sang-byeong

Cheon Sang- byeong ( born January 29, 1930 in Japan, † 28 April 1993) was a South Korean poet.

Life

Cheon Sang- byeong moved to Korea in 1945 in the city of Masan. 1949, when he was still a student, his first poem was published. He enrolled at Seoul National University, but did not graduate.

In 1967 he was involved in an East Berlin spy incident and then barely six months in prison, where he was tortured. Mentally and physically abused, sank the author in alcohol. When he was found unconscious on the street, you do not agreed his family or friends, but took him against his will in a mental institution. His family believed he was dead, and published in his memory an anthology of his poems. Cheon Sang- byeong recovered and gained through marriage back stability in his life. He then began to write poetry again.

His poems are known for their simplicity and clarity.

Even after his death, his popularity and therefore the associated success did not break off. Thus, the Cheon Sang- byeong Poetry Prize is awarded annually and held a festival in his name since 2004.

His wife Mok Sun -ok wrote a book about life with the author, which was published in 2006 in English under the title My Husband the Poet.
