Chilanga Cement

Chilanga Cement is a joint stock company in Zambia in Chilanga few kilometers south of Lusaka.

History

Chilanga Cement was established in 1949 by the Government of Northern Rhodesia and the Commonwealth Development Corporation. In the 1950s, shares of the company to Anglo American and Premier Portland Cement were sold. By 1957, the company was completely privatized. 1973 was re- nationalized, as the Zambian government acquired a majority. In 1994 it became the first Zambian state-owned company, which was privatized by the Commonwealth Development Corporation increased its stake to 50 percent and demanded the board positions for themselves. The remaining shares were offered to Zambia in 1995. So Cilanga Cement was the first Zambian company that was listed on the Lusaka Stock Exchange Stock Exchange.

Business

The core business of Chilanga Cement is the production of cement clinker and cement products such as bricks, blocks, etc. They produced in Chilanga with 226 employees and in Ndola with 215 employees. The total number of employees, so the country is given in 2006 with 850. Its turnover in 2002 was U.S. $ 15.1 million. Their biggest customer is the Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines. The main export markets are Burundi, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Malawi, Zimbabwe, Tanzania. Production capacities are in 2006 with nearly 350,000 tons of full capacity and thus exhausted. Chilanga Cement is the only cement producer in Zambia. In November 2006, the President Levy Mwanawasa laid the foundation stone for a new plant in Lusaka, by which the total production of 600,000 tons per year to achieve. This investment amounts to U.S. $ 100 million

Since 2003 is a member of the Lafarge Cement Chilanga Group, which has its headquarters in Paris and which has production plants for cement, plaster, cement products in 54 countries. Lafarge Commonwealth Development Corporation, a holding company with all the cement plant stakes in Africa, the Pan African Cement taken with holdings of Chilanga Cement in Zambia ( 84.5 percent), Mbeya Cement in Tanzania and Portland Cement in Malawi.
