Children's Book Council (United States)

The Children's Book Council (acronym: CBC, German " Council for Children's Books ") is a 1944 established association of children's book publishers in the United States, one of its objectives the promotion of reading skills of children and the selection and recommendation of children 's literature for educational institutions.

History and Activities

In 1919 Franklin K. Mathiews, librarian of the Boy Scouts of America, in the United States, Children's Book Week (week of children's book ) a. His goal was the promotion of good children's books, and an increased awareness of the literacy of children. 1944 founded a group of children's book editors from various publishers, the Association of Children's Book Editors, Publishers Weekly, the editor Frederick Melcher transferred the responsibility for the Children's Book Week.

After the Association of Children's Book Editor, the activities of the Children's Book Week and beyond had expanded, it was renamed the Children's Book Council ( CBC). After the CBC took over the functions of a pressure group for children's book publishers, the Association transferred the organization of the Children's Book Week, the Foundation 's Every Child a Reader, a 501 (c) association. The CBC is based in New York City.

The CBC annually publishes several recommendation and leaderboards for children's books. The best known of these award lists Children 's Choices that performs the CBC since 1975, together with the International Reading Association. The jurors for Children's Choices are 12,000 children in the United States.
