Chiloglanis

Indefinite Chiloglanis species from the Congo.

The rapids catfish ( Chiloglanis ) is a genus of African catfish family Mochokidae. Rapids catfish live in rapids and fast-flowing rivers and streams in the Nile region and in tropical West Africa.

Features

Rapids catfish are three to four inches long and differ from Synodontis primarily by under constant suction mouth, which in form and function to the suction mouth of the South American armored catfish ( Loricaridae ) recalls. The suction mouth is surrounded by thick, occupied with papillae lips and the fish is used, inter alia, to this, pinning to protect against drifting of stones, wood or plants. The teeth on the premaxilla the vomer and are conical, the bend in the lower jaw and movable. The mandibular teeth are concentrated at the symphysis. The mouth is surrounded by three pairs of short, featherless barbels. Rapids catfish have a laterally only slightly flattened, elongated body, a relatively large head with small, far above eyes. The swim bladder is reduced and partially surrounded by elongated vertebral processes. The fin spines of the pectoral fin is only weakly or not sawn.
