Mochokidae

Synodontis cf vanderwaali, from the Okavango / Namibia

The Mochokidae are a domiciled exclusively in Africa family of catfish, for which there is no German names in general. Although they are often referred to as Catfishes, but this only includes the subfamily Mochokinae. The second belongs to the Mochokidae subfamily, Chiloglanidinae or African catfish, but do not have feathered barbels and would thus be designated completely wrong with the name Catfishes. The English name for this family is Squeaker Catfishes, because of the squeaking or squealing noise that they can produce. The scientific name derives from the word Mochokidae ' Mochok ' that indicates the author of De Joannis (1835 ) as a local name for the fish in the Nile.

Mark

All representatives have a strong bony head capsule and a prominent shoulder extension ( Humeralfortsatz ). There are three pairs of barbels (two on the lower jaw ) is created, which in the African Saugwelsen ( subfamily Chiloglanidinae ) are integrated into the oral disc. The Fiederbartwelsen ( subfamily Mochokinae ) the mandibular barbels are pinnate. The body is unbeschuppt and without bone plates. The first ray of the dorsal fin is strong, spine -like and usually sawed. The adipose fin is usually relatively large, and supported with a few exceptions without fin rays. The pectoral fins have a strong, thorn-like and sawn hard radiation as a good first fin ray. The caudal fin is designed relatively variable, usually bilobed and split more or less deep.

The representatives of the subfamily Chiloglanidinae are relatively flat built to be optimally adapted to flow- rich waters. In contrast, the body shapes of the species of the subfamily Mochokinae are somewhat variable. One finds both hochrückigere species, such as Synodontis eupterus, some of which even preferred supine swim brichardi (including the back Floating Congo catfish ) and slender, in turn adapted to flow- rich waters types, such as Synodontis.

Likewise, slim but is rather vermiform eg Microsynodontis pollination, which identifies him as species that lives well in highly structured habitats. The mouth shape is generic typical and often an indication of the species membership. The Saugmäuler the Chiloglanidinae different genus-specific. In Hemisynodontis hand, we find the broad membranes in the upper jaw barbels, which had its name to the type H. membranaceus. The species of the genus Synodontis, however, the feathered mandibular barbels catches your eye.

Way of life

While efforts are being inhabited by the Mochokiden the most diverse types of water, but it always involves freshwaters. The genera Atopochilus, Chiloglanis and Euchilichthys live in fast-flowing waters and, like the South American armored catfishes ( Loricariidae ), a mouth with which the animals can get stuck eyes on the ground.
