Chilperic II

Chilperic II Daniel (* 670, † 30 January to 13 May 721 in Noyon ), King of the Franks 716-721 out of the house of the Merovingians. He was a son of the murdered king of the Franks 675 Childeric II and the Bilichild, daughter of King Sigebert III.

The young Chilperic was exiled after the murder of his parents in a monastery, where he lived as "Brother Daniel" 40. 716 he was by the opponents of Charles Martel, the house Meier Raganfrid and Plectrude of Austrasia, as the successor of Dagobert III. raised to the king of Neustria, the core area of the Frankish Empire. The Palatinate Compiègne was his residence.

Famous is the statement that he had been mostly carried by Raganfrid on a ceremonial ox carts in his face. In fact, he was brought to the annual March Field with only one of the traditional corresponding ox carts.

Chilperich or Raganfrids ( because Chilperic acted only as a de facto shadow king) alliances of convenience with the frieze Duke Radbod ( 717) and Eudo of Aquitaine (718 ) against the strong opposition of the Carolingians, especially against Charles Martel failed. Charles defeated the Neustrians in Amel (French Amblève ) Vinchy ( 717) and Soissons ( 718).

When supported by Charles Martel, Clotaire IV died in 719, Charles had to deliver Chilperic II of Eudo and recognized him with the restoration of his influence in Neustria as king.

Chilperic II died in 721 and was buried at Noyon. Charles Martel certain Theuderic IV as his successor.

It is unclear whether the last Merovingian king, Childeric III. has been his son. Nor is it clear his name. It is conceivable that he was baptized as Daniel and later Chilperic accepted as a coronation name to express a degree of combat readiness, or that he was born as Chilperic and his entry into the monastery the name Daniel chose.
