Noyon

Noyon, the Gallo- Roman Noviomagus Veromanduorum, is a municipality in the department of Oise and chief town of a canton in the Picardie region. It lies on the Oise and the Canal du Nord, 24 km north of Compiègne and about 100 kilometers north of Paris.

The community Noyon 1800 hectares, is located in the middle at 52 m and has 13,593 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ), of which about 40 percent immigrants.

History

  • In the Roman Empire the town was founded under the name Noviomagus; he was secured in late antiquity by a city wall.
  • 531 Noyon was a bishopric Medardus.
  • 721 died in Noyon King of the Franks Chilperic II, and was buried ibid.
  • 768 Charlemagne was crowned at Noyon to the king of the Franks.
  • 891, the city was ravaged by the Normans
  • On July 3, 987 Hugh Capet was crowned at Noyon to the king of France.
  • Around 1120, the Knights Payen de Montdidier was appointed in Noyon by Hugh of Payns, Grand Master of the Knights Templar, for the first provincial champion for those Francia. Noyon was therefore one of the first points of the Knights Templar in France today.
  • Around 1150 the cathedral was begun with the construction.
  • On July 10, 1509 John Calvin, founder of Calvinism, was born in Noyon.
  • On August 13, 1516 included Francis I of France and Spain's King Charles I, who later became Emperor Charles V., gave up the Treaty of Noyon, in which France was Milan and Naples.
  • Noyon in 1559 was awarded the Peace of Cateau- Cambrésis France.
  • During the First World War there were two battles of Noyon September 1914
  • 1917 takes the German army in front of a front shortening and evacuated the city.
  • In the spring of 1918, conquest and reconquest of the city followed. Bombing to stop the German supply to the front, lead to significant destruction during the war.

Policy

Noyon applies for a list of the French Ministry of the Interior as one of the 23 most insecure municipalities in the country. The right-wing National Front reached 33 percent of the vote in the last election.
