Pierrefonds (Oise)

Pierrefonds is a commune with 1890 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Oise in the Picardie region; it belongs to the district Compiègne and Canton Attichy.

Pierrefonds is on the edge of the forest of Compiègne. A district of Pierrefonds is Palesne.

History

The village center is not far from the Gallo-Roman remains that were found on the Mont Berny. This settlement was located at the junction of Roman roads Soissons - Soissons and Beauvais on Champlieu - Beauvais through the ford of Compiègne. Here, the edge of a swamp, today the forest of Compiègne was then covered, and at that time marked the western boundary of the Gallic Suessiones.

In the 10th century the old castle was destroyed. The new castle was built further west, near the woods on a hill. The village was formed at the foot of this hill. In the 11th century the rule of Pierrefonds included under Nivelon I. ( † around 1072 ) a part of the forest of Compiègne (now Forêt de Cuise called ), Retz, Chelles, Couloisy, Croutoy, Haute -Fontaine, Jaulzy, Saint- Etienne, Retheuil, Montigny- long Rain, Taillefontaine, Morte Fontaine, etc. Pierrefonds castle was the largest of six gentlemen ( Châtelleries ) the county of Valois. King Louis XIII. made in 1616 by Charles Pierrefonds de Valois, duc d' Angoulême besiege, after taking Richelieu ordered the destruction of the castle.

During the Second Empire Pierrefonds was under the name of Pierrefonds -les -Bains, a spa town; During this time the castle was rebuilt.
