Chittaranjan Das

Chittaranjan Das ( Bengali: চিত্তরঞ্জন দাস, Cittarañjan Dās; born November 25, 1870 in Kolkata, † June 16, 1925 in Darjeeling ) was a Bengali lawyer and politician of the Indian independence movement. He was dubbed by his followers with the honorary name Deshbandhu ( " friend of the country" ). He was a member and President of the Indian National Congress.

After training in England, his career began in 1909 with the successful defense of Aurobindo Ghosh in the process to its involvement in a bomb attack in Alipur (South Kolkata ) from the previous year.

During the campaign of non- cooperation of the years 1919 to 1922, he was one of the leading supporters. He initiated first with Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi boycott British clothing and wore indigenous Khadi clothes after he had destroyed his European stuff. But together with Motilal Nehru, he later founded the Swaraj Party platform of expression to its non - moderate views in struggle against British colonial rule.

Chittaranjan That was editor of the newspaper Forward ( later Liberty ) and the first mayor of Calcutta Corporation. He held the presidency of the Indian National Congress in 1922 in Gaya. Throughout his political career, he was in poor health.

He was an advocate of non-violent, constitutional independence. His political students Subhash Chandra Bose belongs.
