Chlodwig, Landgrave of Hesse-Philippsthal-Barchfeld

Clovis Alexis Ernst von Hesse - Philippsthal - Barchfeld ( born July 30, 1876 in Steinfurt, † November 17, 1954 in Bad Hersfeld ) out of the house of Hesse was titular Landgrave of Hesse - Philippsthal - Barchfeld.

Life

Clovis was born in 1876 as the second child of Prince Wilhelm of Hesse- Philippsthal - Barchfeld and Princess Juliane of Bentheim - Steinfurt. He grew up on a d Fulda in the city palace of Rotenburg. At the age of 29, he became the sole heir of his childless deceased uncle, the Landgrave of Hesse- Alexis Philippstal - Barchfeld ( 1829-1905 ), as head of the Hessen- Philippstal - Barchfeld and its possessions in Herleshausen and Barchfeld. In 1925 he inherited also his unmarried and childless deceased uncle Ernst, the last representative of the Hessen- Philippstal, and thus became heir not only of the possession in Philippstal, but also of the previously jointly held by the two uncles Familienfideikommisses the two Philipp Thaler lines, the 1880 had been set up and, inter alia, the City Palace Hanau, the castle and the Rotenburg Schönfeld castle in Kassel with included.

Family

Landgraf Clovis served in the Prussian army, reaching the rank of lieutenant colonel. On 26 May 1904 he married Princess Caroline of Solms- Lich - Hohensolms, daughter of Prince Hermann, in her hometown of Lich. The couple had five children:

In the early 1930s, three of the children ( William, Alexander Friedrich and Victoria Cecilia ) of the NSDAP joined. Alexander Friedrich, who suffered from epilepsy, was sterilized by the Nazis on 27 September 1938 a year later he died. The eldest son, Wilhelm fell when Hauptsturmführer of the Waffen- SS during World War II.

Clovis died at the age of 78 in Bad Hersfeld. He was survived by his wife and his two daughters. His grandson, William succeeded him as head of the Hessen- Philippstal.
