Chojnów

Chojnów ( German: Haynau ) is a town in Lower Silesian Voivodeship in western Poland.

Geography

The city is located about 18 kilometers west of the county town Legnica ( Liegnitz ) on the Skora ( Skora ).

History

The place Haynau was first mentioned in 1272 and received a city charter in 1333. The city announced the affiliation of Silesia to Poland, Bohemia and the German Empire, which it passed in 1742 from Austrian in Prussian possession.

During the War of Liberation defeated in the Battle of Haynau on 26 May 1813 Prussian Blücher riding association under the French corps Maison.

After the Second World War Haynau 1945, together with the east of the Oder - Neisse border located Silesia part of Poland and was named Chojnów. Its inhabitants were expelled and repopulated the city with Polish immigrants.

Community

The rural community Chojnów to which the city does not belong, had on 30 June 2010 9,398 inhabitants. The municipality is divided ( German name until 1945) in 22 districts with a mayor's office.

Attractions

The single-tower cathedral was rebuilt in the 15th century in the Gothic style and is the largest three-nave brick church Silesia.
