Chris Columbus (musician)

Christopher " Chris " Columbus ( born June 17, 1902 in Greenville, Pitt County, North Carolina as Joseph Christopher Columbus Morris, † 20 August 2002 in New Jersey) was an American jazz drummer and bandleader.

Chris Columbus was from the 1920s until the 1970s an active musician; he was the father of drummer Sonny Payne. From the 1930s until the late 40's he led several formations, he has performed with, inter alia, also in New York's Savoy Ballroom. Mid -1940s he played with Al Sears and from 1946 with Louis Jordan, where he stayed until 1952. This year he played among others in Benny Carter's orchestra. Beginning of the 1960s was one of Columbus at the organ band of Wild Bill Davis; In 1967 he participated in recordings of the Duke Ellington Orchestra (Studio Sessions, Vol 8). In the 1970s, he had again own formations; He also went with Wild Bill Davis on European tours. In France he worked with Al Grey, Milt Buckner and Floyd Smith.

In some discography information he was sometimes referred to as Joe Morris; However, it is not the same jazz musicians Joe Morris ( trumpet ) and Joe Morris (guitarist ) to be confused.
