Joe Morris (guitarist)

Joe Morris ( * September 13 1955 in New Haven, Connecticut ) is an American musician (guitar, bass) of the Creative jazz and new music improvisation.

Life and work

Joe Morris first learned trumpet before moving in 1969 to the guitar and first played in the rock genre. He then expanded his interests to free jazz and new music. In 1975 he turned to the improvised music. He began his professional career in the Boston area, where he was after the first guest appearances in Belgium and Holland, a member of the Boston Improvisers ' Group. An early mentor and partner was the pianist Lowell Davidson. He played in Boston with Billy Bang, Andrew Cyrille, Peter Kowald, Joe McPhee, Malcolm Goldstein, Samm Bennett, Butch Morris and Thurman Barker. Between 1987 and 1989 he lived in New York City, where he performed with his trio also at the Knitting Factory.

Since 1981, he took on his own Riti label on a number of albums. In 1995 he played in the studio (Three Men Walking ) and on a subsequent tour with Joe Maneri Mat Maneri and in Europe, with the album Out Right Now was recorded for HatHut Records. Other records are issued at Soul Note, Leo Records, Knitting Factory, Omnitone and AUM Fidelity. He emerges in part from a soloist, as in the album Singularity of 2000, or improvised with musicians such as the viola player Mat Maneri, clarinetist Ken Vandermark and bassist Chris Lightcap accompanied. Joe Morris also worked with William Parker, Whit Dickey, Rob Brown, Karen Borca, Eugene Chadbourne, Susie Ibarra or Hamid Drake. As a bassist, with his bass Quartet from Taylor Ho Bynum, Allan Chase and Luther Gray, he recorded the album in 2007 High Definition.

Morris ' guitar playing is strongly influenced by Derek Bailey, but also involves elements of traditional African music with an avant-garde and processed influences of musicians such as saxophonist Eric Dolphy and Jimmy Lyons. As a side instruments Morris also plays banjo and banjolele.
