Hamid Drake

Hamid Drake ( born August 3, 1955 in Monroe, Louisiana) is an American jazz musician (drums, percussion).

Life and work

Drake grew up in Chicago, where he learned the drums son of Fred Anderson, before he took his place in the band Anderson. Soon after, he also worked with George Lewis and other musicians from the AACM circle. Since 1978 he was like Adam Rudolph Foday Musa Suso Mandingo Griot to Society and then played with Don Cherry and Jim Pepper, but also for example in the reggae scene in Chicago. He also played with the soul singer Melba Moore and the rock band Animal Farm. He frequently collaborates with William Parker, David Murray, Nicole Mitchell, Peter Brötzmann, Scott Fields, George Gräwe, Irène Schweizer and Ken Vandermark, but also with Bill Laswell, with Wadada Leo Smith or Michael Zerang.

Drake was one of the first American drummers who are serious percussion music traditions of other musical cultures studied and applied in the late 1990s as one of the outstanding percussionists.
