Christian Hansen (architect)

Hans Christian Hansen ( born April 20, 1803 in Copenhagen, Denmark, † May 2, 1883 in Vienna, Austria ) was a Danish architect.

Life

He was the eldest of six children of the violinist and insurance employees Rasmus Hansen Braathen (1774-1824) from Eiker ( Buskerud, Norway) and Sophie Elisabeth Jensen from Nyboder in Copenhagen. His brother was the architect Theophil von Hansen ( 1813-1891 ). Hansen married 1857 Theresa Verbiz ( 1831-1889 ) from Präwald ( Krain, Austria ), the daughter of Mathias and Mary Vebiz Waj.

At Hansen's models included the unrelated with him countryman Christian Frederik Hansen, the most important influence of the ancient Roman architecture pioneers of neo-classical style in northern Europe. Hansen oriented, however, like his brother Theophilus, more to the ancient Greeks and even built in Athens itself He was the court architect of the Greek King Otto ( 1815-1867 ).

Together with his architect colleagues Eduard show Bert (1804-1860), he was commissioned by the archaeologist and curator Ludwig Ross (1806-1859) in the 1830s, the Nike temple on the Acropolis again. Among his most important buildings, the main building of the University of Athens include ( construction period 1839-1864 ) and in the Copenhagen City Hospital ( 1859-1863 ) and the Zoological Museum ( 1863-1869 ).

Hansen was later also his brother Theophilus professor at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts.

Though deceased when visiting his brother in Vienna in 1883, Hansen was buried in Denmark.
