Christian Neureuther

Christian Neureuther ( born April 28, 1949 in Garmisch -Partenkirchen, Germany ) is a former German ski racer. He specializes in the slalom and won in this discipline six World Cup races.

Biography

Neureuther, the son of a physician, began after he left school to study medicine. This he was, however, due to the many interruptions by the skiing on very soon. In 1968 he made ​​as an 18- year-old first time through sporting successes headlines, with fourth place in downhill skiing at the German Championships. A year later he won the giant slalom his first of twelve league titles. In the slalom he won 1974-1978 five times in series.

In winter 1969/70 Neureuther first participated at the Ski World Cup. As the biggest rising star of the German Ski Association he came in the next time with the pressure to win, no longer cope. In promising race he crashed more often and therefore came to his famous nickname " fall Reuther ".

After an unsuccessful Olympic season Neureuther came into the world top in winter 1972/73. Ironically, in one of the worst in the entire World Cup slalom program, the Lauberhorn Slalom in Wengen, he drove to the first World Cup victory. End of the season he took fourth place in the overall World Cup. Disappointing for him was then the fifth place at the Olympic Games in 1976.

The 1979/80 season was then again quite successful, though he also could not achieve a medal at the 1980 Winter Olympics. At the time, now 30 years old, he reached again the third in the slalom World Cup standings. At the end of this season Neureuther declared retirement from sport.

Neureuther has worked as alpine skiing expert since the Olympic Winter Games in Nagano as a co- moderator for the ARD. Since 1980, he is married to the equally successful alpine skier Rosi Mittermeier. They have two adult children, Ameli and Felix Neureuther. 2007, the Bavarian sports award him was " high performance athletes Plus " award in the category.

His great-grandfather is the painter Eugen Napoleon Neureuther, after the Munich Maxvorstadt Neureutherstraße is named. Neureuther was also a member of the jury on the television program Dalli Dalli, where he became the successor of Ekkehard Fritsch.
