Crans- Montana is a tourist resort in the French- speaking part of the canton of Valais on the high plateau to the town Montana, which has grown with the 1929 newly built holiday resort of Crans -sur -Sierre and become known in the tourist parlance under this double name.

The holiday area also include the five municipalities Chermignon, Icogne, Lens, Mollens and Randogne as well as a number of smaller settlements on the slopes high above the valley of the Rhône between Sion and Sierre. The grounds of the resort of Crans- Montana was made in 1892 by the opening of Hôtel du Parc by Messrs. Antille and Zufferey from Sierre. However, the real founder is Dr. Theodor Stephani, who in 1897 brought his patients in these small lakes and vast forests of spruce decorated plateau and 1899 the sanatorium Beauregard opened.

Access

Both from customs and from Sierre from lead curvy access roads from the plane passing through the Rhône Valley highway. At 13 kilometers, an altitude difference of 1000 meters is thereby overcome. The driveway through the vineyard slopes and alpine meadows lasts from Sion, about 35, of Sierre in about 20 minutes.

From Sierre of the place is also a funicular reachable from Sion, with a bus route. Between the hillside settlements also run numerous bike and hiking trails.

Tourism and Sport

Engestrasse trains with hotels and apartments, cafes and restaurants, shops and administrative institutions dominate the center of Crans- sur -Sierre and Montana, respectively. There is a high volume of traffic in the peak season. Several ponds are present at the edges of town with green areas.

Became famous Crans- Montana by numerous events in alpine skiing. So here the Alpine Ski World Championships were held in 1987. In total, there are 160 kilometers of ski slopes. On the southern edge of the Plaine -Morte glacier summer skiing a few years ago was possible.

In summer, Crans -Montana is a center of golf. The two golf courses ( 9 and 18 holes) -present golf club Crans- sur -Sierre held here annually the Omega European Masters, one of the most popular golf tournaments in Europe.

In the late 1960s, a mountain race was held on the road from Sierre to Crans -Montana, which also scored for the European Hill Climb Championship.

Crans -Montana hosted the Mountain Running World Championships 2008.

Gondola lifts, cable cars and a 135 km long network of trails for hikers and mountain bikers open up the north of the high plateau of Crans -Montana, the glaciers, rock groups, mountain lakes, alpine, mats and coniferous forests on the southern edge of the Bernese Alps. On the ridges at about 3000 m altitude past wild crowds, along the Plaine -Morte glacier, white horn, lunch horn, Rohrbachstein and Wetzsteinhorn runs the language border between the French- and German-speaking Switzerland and at the same time the cantonal border to the Bernese Oberland. Embedded in this network of trails is also the Lac de Tseuzier (1777 m).

From the viewpoint of Bella Lui ( 2543 m) south to see the Rhone on a spectrum from the mixing Abel - group in the east to the peaks in the lower Valais in the west, including the Matterhorn and Mont Blanc on a clear day the glacier in the Valais Alps.
