Christian Weise

Christian way, pseudonyms Siegmund No matter, Orontes, Catharinus Civilis, Tarquinius Eatullus and more, ( born April 30, 1642 in Zittau, † October 21, 1708 ) was a German writer, playwright and educator.

Life

Way was born the son of " magister tertium " ( assistant teacher ) Elias manner, studied theology at Leipzig University and graduated from there in 1663 a Master's promotion. There he developed an interest in subjects such as rhetoric, politics, history and poetry, where he lectured for his Master's degree for a short time. When he did not succeed the teaching profession, he entered in 1668 in Halle a job as a secretary to the Minister Simon Philipp von Leiningen- Westerburg of Duke Augustus of Saxe - Weimar. In 1670 he was tutor at Baron Gustav Adolf von der Schulenburg in Ampfurth near Magdeburg, but switched after only six months as a professor at the Gymnasium Illustre Augusteum in Weissenfels. In 1678 he became rector of the Zittau Gymnasium and also took over the management of the local council library, which he considerably enlarged over time and goal for.

During his time as rector of the grammar school he had the students many of his 50 plays list. His solidarity with the people he brought in comedies in Oberlausitzer and North Bohemian dialect expression. As a special merit is attributed to him, to have raised the Zittau town theater to the cultural center of the city. His 1683 written Masaniello tragedy about the fate of the Neapolitan rebels Tommaso Masaniello learned in the 1950s in Zittau a reissue.

Way, led the late 17th century as rector of the Zittau Gymnasium German as a language of instruction. He joined because of decrepit eyes 1708 from his office as rector.

Way mostly wrote school plays and satirical works about social and political ills of his time. He criticized the aristocratic world of the bourgeois point of view and used a the era, unusually sober, realistic style.

The library in Zittau, in which both the Council and its library collections are united, since 1954 bears the name of Christian Weise Library. In addition, the local Christian Weise -Gymnasium bears his name.
