Christina Ebner

Christine Ebner ( born March 26, 1277 Nuremberg, † December 27, 1356 in Engelberg valley ) was a German Dominican mystic and that ( the later Barons Ebner von Eschenbach ) came from the Nuremberg patrician family of Ebner.

Life and work

Christine has already appeared in 1289, as a twelve- year-old, in the Dominican convent Engelthal at Nuremberg; from the beginning they aspired to a strict monastic life. A year after her novitiate she was first attacked by a mysterious disease which recurred annually for a long time. By 1291, she had visions and extraordinary grace experiences that she wrote at the suggestion of her confessor Konrad von feet since 1317; these transcripts, were created in several versions, are known under the title Life and revelations. At her age, she was a person of public rank: You received visits from the Emperor Charles IV, who asked for her blessing, and the mystic Heinrich von Nördlingen, who introduced her to the mystic Mechthild of Magdeburg, Heinrich Suso and John Tauler. Even with the Mödinger mystic Margareta Ebner ( which was not related to her ) she had contact. In her notes, she took part in the conflict of Ludwig of Bavaria with the Holy See and the tribulations of Flagellantenprozessionen of 1349 as well as to an earthquake and the ravages of the Black Death in Nuremberg. In the years 1338-1340 Christine may have been prioress of the monastery.

Her work, especially her grace Vita, showing a passionate commitment to a personal relationship with God and new forms of religiosity, as they are now commonly referred to as " mystical ". Here, Christine has been intensively with the current problems in their time apart, eg in view of Askeseformen and theological issues, with, just, claimed as a woman high authority. It removes more and more of the bloody forms of asceticism and develops the image of a loving, people near God.

Probably the 1340-1346 resulting, 1871 published in the print Engelthaler Sister Book ( From the graces overload), which contains 47 reports of monastery nationals and their grace experiences, is named after the unique testimony of Inzigkofener manuscript from 1451 ( f.118r: " I cristin ebnerin " ) also her work.
