Christoph Anton Migazzi

Christoph Bartholomäus Anton Migazzi, Count Wall and solar tower (* October 14, 1714 in Trento, † April 14, 1803 in Vienna) was a Roman Catholic Archbishop of Vienna and a cardinal.

Life

Migazzi studied in Rome on led by the Jesuits Collegium Germanicum and after ordination was a canon in Brixen and Trent.

In 1745 he became a judge at the Vatican, the Roman Rota Supreme Court, and was appointed on September 20, 1751 coadjutor of Mechelen (Belgium) and Titular Archbishop of Cartagine. He received episcopal consecration on 10 October of the same year by the Cardinal Bishop of Frascati, Giovanni Antonio Guadagni. At the request of Maria Theresa was Migazzi ambassador in Madrid. On August 28, 1756 he was archbishop by Pope Benedict XIV 's personal title awarded per hac vice and appointed Bishop of Waitzen (Hungary ) appointed. On March 18, 1757 he was Archbishop of Vienna. After the death of Bishop Karl Esterházy he was to him Emperor Joseph II in 1785 forced to abdicate on April 19, 1762 in Waitzen administrator. Soon after his inauguration as archbishop of the Archdiocese of Vienna, he founded ( 1758) the Vienna seminary. In 1760 he became president of the Studienhofkommission, which had been founded by Maria Theresa for educational reform. On November 23, 1761, the appointment was made cardinal by Pope Clement XII. with the titular church of Santi Quattro Coronati. In 1781 he supported the publication of Rosa Linos Bible translation. He was an opponent of Jansenism - with whom he had temporarily sympathizes - and Febronianism. Despite many hostilities he fought persistently intervention in ecclesiastical affairs by the enlightened monarchs of his time ( See also: Josephinism ).

An unexpected consequence of the church policy of Joseph II was the significant extension of the Vienna diocesan territory. In Migazzis tenure, the Archdiocese of Vienna reached its current dimensions. In 1783, Vienna parishes received east of Vienna from the Diocese of Raab, and from the Diocese of Passau she received in 1784 the parishes under the Manhart Berg ( Wine Quarter) and from 1785 transferred to Saint Pölten Diocese of Wiener Neustadt Wiener Neustadt.

Migazzi was buried in the crypt of St. Stephen's Episcopal Cathedral. In 1894 in Vienna Meidling ( 12 th) of the Migazziplatz was named after him.
