Christoph von Marschall

Christoph Freiherr Marschall von Bieber Stein ( born 1959 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) is a German journalist and since 1991 editor of the Berlin newspaper Der Tagesspiegel.

Life

Christoph von Marschall was born in Freiburg in 1959, made in 1978 at the Lessing -Gymnasium in Frankfurt High School and studied Eastern European history and political science in Freiburg, Mainz and Krakow. In 1988 he received his doctorate in Freiburg. From 1989 to 1991 he worked for the Süddeutsche Zeitung and reported, among other things about the mass exodus of East German citizens through Hungary to the west, and on the democratic change in Communist Eastern Europe. In 1991 he moved to Berlin at the daily mirror. There he directed until 2005, the opinion page. He is a regular commentator in Germany Funk, author of political feature articles in the Germany radio and writes for the magazine Cicero and The Atlantic Times. Since 2005, he reported as U.S. correspondent from Washington for the Tagesspiegel.

In June 2011, the press office of the White House responded to questions submitted to U.S. President Barack Obama. Der Tagesspiegel admitted with publication, that it was not a classic interview in person. Von Marschall Obama sat against either, nor has he spoken with the president. Der Tagesspiegel writes: " This interview was conducted in writing: Our correspondent submitted the questions, the White House sent Obama's answers. This is connected with restrictions. You can not ask spontaneous. " Der Tagesspiegel provided no evidence that the President has seen the questions personally. It was the first time that a German media has published on this basis, an "interview" with a U.S. president. Many German newspapers reprinted the written question answered catalog, without informing the reader about the occurrence. Von Marschall is currently (2012 ) is the only German member of the White House Press Corps.

Awards

In 2002, Marshall was awarded the German -American Commentary Award of the Foreign Office for a review of the terrorist attacks of 11 September 2001.

In 2005, his contribution over Skierbieszów, the birthplace of the former German President Horst Köhler in Poland, and won the role of the community as Germanisierungslabor the SS with the German - Polish Journalist Award.

Also in 2005 he received the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland ( Cavalier Cross) for his efforts in the German -Polish reconciliation. 2010 marks him the Steuben -Schurz -Gesellschaft, the oldest German -American friendship organization, with her German - American Media Prize.
