Christopher Cocksworth

Christopher John Cocks Worth ( born January 12, 1959 in West Sussex ) is a British Anglican theologian. He is since 2008 the Bishop of Coventry.

Life

Cocks Worth was born near Horsham, where he grew up and attended local schools. He studied theology at Manchester University. He initially earned a First Class Degree, then the academic degree of Bachelor of Arts in Theology and later a PhD as Doctor of Philosophy ( Ph.D.).

In preparation for the priesthood, he attended St John's College, Nottingham. In 1984 he was ordained a priest. From 1988 to 1992 he was Vicar ( Curate ) on the Common Christian Church in Epsom in the Diocese of Guildford.

From 1992 to 1997 he served as University Chaplain ( Chaplain ) at Royal Holloway College, University of London. From 1997 to 2001 he was Director (Director) of the Southern Theological Education and Training Scheme, a theological institution for priests and lay training for the Church of England. He was appointed Honorarkanoniker ( Honorary Canon ) at the Cathedral of Guildford in 1999. From 2001 he was Head ( Principal ) of Ridley Hall College, Cambridge; grew in this period under his leadership, the number of students significantly.

He was from 1996 to 2006 a member of the Liturgical Commission of the Church of England; he was involved in this function in the reform of worship to priestly ordination and the selection and compilation of Common Worship Daily Prayer.

In May 2008, his appointment as Bishop of Coventry, was officially announced as the successor to Colin Bennett, who went into retirement. In May 2008, it was confirmed by the chapter his election as Bishop of Coventry. On 3 July 2008 Cocks Worth was officially consecrated in the Cathedral of Southwark bishop. On 1 November 2008, he was introduced with a solemn Mass at the Cathedral of Coventry in his office.

Cockworth in the context of the Church of England in the tradition of evangelicalism. His interest is in particular the tension between piety, faith and church doctrine, especially hinaichtlich charismatic experience piety and liturgy of the Anglican Church. He was regarded as one of the possible candidates to succeed Rowan Williams, Office of the Archbishop of Canterbury.

Cocks Worth is the author of several theological books, including Evangelical Eucharistic Thought in the Church of England ( 1993); An Anglican Companion (1996 ), Holy, Holy, Holy: Worshipping the Trinitarian God ( 1997); Being a Priest Today: Exploring Priestly Identity (2002, 2nd edition 2006 ); Holding Together: Gospel, Church and Spirit (2008).

Private

Cocks Worth is now married for over 30 years. His wife Charlotte, née Pytches, is a trained teacher of the deaf and dumb; she taught for many years as a teacher, children who were excluded from the official schooling. The marriage produced five sons were born. Cocks Worth is the son of David Pytches ( born 1931 ), former " Bishop of Chile, Bolivia and Peru " in the Anglican Communion.

His leisure time activities and hobbies include an interest in film and theater, visiting historic buildings, hiking, swimming and cycling.

Membership in the House of Lords

Cocks Worth heard since November 19, 2012 as a clergyman Lord the House of Lords officially. In the House of Lords he succeeds by Nicholas Reade, Bishop of Blackburn, who went into retirement. On January 15, 2013, was officially introduced in the House of Lords in his office. In the introduction and the oath he was accompanied by Michael Langrish, Bishop of Exeter, and David Urquhart, Bishop of Birmingham. His inaugural address was delivered on March 7, 2013; occasion of International Women 's Day on March 8, 2013 Cocks Worth went in his speech on the role of women in society.
