Church of Our Lady (Aarhus)

The Vor Frue Kirke ( Our German women church) in Aarhus is the south wing of the medieval and repealed after the Reformation Dominican Monastery of St. Nicholas, which was donated by about 1227. The original building, of which the crypt is still preserved, was the first stone Aarhus Cathedral until the further east bridge subsequently was put into operation and the Dominicans moved in. After the Reformation, the church was rededicated to a Lutheran parish church.

Crypt

In the choir of the church today is a completely preserved crypt, which can possibly be regarded as the oldest preserved Steinkirchenbau in Northern Europe. Presumably, they arose shortly after 1060, as the wooden cathedral was burned down in an attack Harald of Harten. The construction consists of Quellenkalk. At an unknown time of access by the now also built new chancel and nave was walled. The old church hall was completely forgotten and was rediscovered only in 1955 during a renovation of the church. Two years later, the vaulted hall was rededicated and has since been regularly used for special services. The Romanesque crucifix above the altar is a copy. The original from Gammel Aby is located in the National Museum, Copenhagen.
