Church of Saint Panteleimon (Thessaloniki)

The Church of St. Panteleimon in Thessaloniki (Greek Ναός του Αγίου Παντελεήμονα Naos tou Agiou Pandeleimona ), is a Byzantine church from the 14th century. The north of the Egnatiou Street Situated on the corner of Iasonídou and Arrianoú in the eastern part of downtown near the Rotunda small church is since 1988 part of the UNESCO World Heritage ( Early Christian and Byzantine buildings in Thessaloniki ).

History

When built probably at the beginning of the 14th century church, it could be the former Theotókos - Períblebtos Church. In 1548 the conversion was carried out in a mosque ( İshakiye Camii ). In the earthquake of 1978, the building was damaged.

Construction

The church has a domed cruciform church with an initial charge of the choir area, kuppelgekröntem narthex and in the east ending in two chapels on three sides dealing, of which only the chapels have been preserved. The main dome has an octagonal drum. The apse with a triple window is closed on five sides.

Equipment

Few of the original frescoes have been preserved, including the representation of the Mother of God ( in the prothesis to the left of the choir ). In diaconicon important saints are represented.
