Hagia Sophia (Thessaloniki)

Hagia Sophia (Greek Αγία Σοφία Agia Sofia ) is a Church of the Holy Wisdom in Thessaloniki, Greece. The three-nave basilica was built in the 7th century on the foundations of a church from the year 315; it is regarded as a forerunner of the cross-domed churches. The dome has a diameter of 10 meters and the floor plan of the church is almost square. Inside mosaics dating from the 8th and 9th centuries are available.

History

The church was malt during the Byzantine Bilderstreits.Während the Fourth Crusade, the church was the city's cathedral. 1359 Gregory Palamas was buried in the church.

1523/1524 the building was converted into a mosque.

In case of fire in Thessaloniki in 1917, the building was mainly damaged inside, until 1980, an extensive renovation instead. Together with other early Christian and Byzantine buildings on the site, the church was declared in 1988 under the summary designation Early Christian and Byzantine buildings in Thessaloniki, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
