Clann Zú

Clann Zú ( Ausspr. / ' clown ' to :/ ), Irish " zoo people " or "Zoo Family " were a Australian- Irish- British rock band residing in Melbourne and sometimes Dublin.

History

Clann Zú was founded in 1999 in Melbourne. End of May 2005, broke up the band after a shorter creativity and appearance pause.

Two members working on their side project MyDisco on. Declan de Barra is active under his own name and has completed his first solo album Song of a Thousand Birds, composed of some former Clann Zú members as well as some well-known Irish musicians.

Style

Clann Zú combined guitar-based rock in the tradition of Pearl Jam and Jeff Buckley with sophisticated, but never over-produced arrangements and structures that they brought at least near the post-rock area. In addition to the usual in rock music instruments, and some electronics put Clann Zú an electrically amplified and often distorted violin. This was in addition to the bodhrán, an Irish hand drum, with especially on some previous recordings to a more than slight hint of Irish traditional music. On the last album Black Coats and Bandages these traditional component was hardly more perceiving. However, the texts of two plays were written and performed entirely in the Irish language. Another potential point of their music made the contrast between the sometimes quite aggressive music and the high, fragile yet intense voice acting de Barras.

Unlike many other bands in the post-rock area Clann Zú represented an open and dedicated political stance. In particular, the global hunger and globalization played a central role in their texts and statements.
