Clannad

Clannad is an Irish musical group. Their music style is a mix of Irish folk music, rock, new age and world music.

Band History

Clannad was founded in Gweedore, County Donegal, of the Brennan family. The name stands for at Clann as Dobhair ( a clan or a family from Dobhair - Gaoth Dobhair is the Irish name for Gweedore ).

Moya Brennan, Ciarán Brennan and Pól Brennan came early on in the pub her father Leo. After a short time the lineup was completed by her uncles Noel Duggan and Padraig Duggan. In 1970, she won a talent contest in Letterkenny. Her native language is, as usual in the Gaeltacht, Irish and not English.

1973 released their first album Clannad. Rasch won Clannad fans, especially in their home country and in Germany. Maire ( Moya ) sister Eithne was from 1979 to 1982 also member of the band and worked on the albums Crann Ull and Fuaim with. They then launched a successful solo career as Enya.

In the winter of 1982 Clannad created the theme music for the BBC TV film Harry 's Game, and came thus into the Top 5 in the UK charts. In 1983, the album Magical Ring 1984 Legend and the soundtrack for the successful British television series Robin of Sherwood ( German title: Robin Hood). Clannad thus won the BAFTA TV Award for best original television soundtrack.

In 1985 the album Macalla, increasingly electronic instruments and effects, began on the Clannad. It also contained a duet of Máire Ní Bhraonáin with the U2 singer Bono ( In a Lifetime ), which reached in 1986 and again in 1989 high in the charts.

The follow-up album Sirius was completed by the band in Los Angeles; while they worked together with local musicians. 1989 appeared the first best-of album Past Present, in addition to a selection of old songs but also some new compositions. It reached the Top 10 on the British charts and eventually went platinum. Pole then rose from out of the band and devoted himself to his own projects. Since he was the mastermind until then, the rest of the musicians had since been more concerned with the texts and dubbing of pieces.

In 1992, the song Theme from Harry 's Game was used Patriot for the film. In the same year the song I Will Find You was in the film The Last of the Mohicans by Michael Mann use. The title was published the following year (1993 ) on the album Banba.

With the album released in 1997 Landmarks Clannad a Grammy Award winner in the category New Age.

Published in 1999, Nick Bracegirdle ( Chicane alias ) a trance remix of Theme from Harry 's Game under the title Saltwater. The new version reached in several European countries high in the charts and became a club hit.

After a long break Clannad in 2007 gave several concerts in the British Isles and on the European folk festivals. In the same year she received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the ceremony of the Meteor Awards.
