Classical Gas

Classical Gas is an instrumental composed by Mason Williams tune. Originally the piece was entitled " Classical Gasoline" but it has been renamed from Williams in " Classical Gas ". On the original recording, Williams plays the guitar and is backed by an orchestra. It was published in February 1968 on the album The Mason Williams Phonograph Record. In August 1968, " Classical Gas " reached the Top 2 in the U.S. charts and sold over 1 million copies. Williams took the melody as a solo guitar piece again in his 1970 released album "Handmade". In addition, he took in 1987 a version with Mannheim Steamroller on.

1973 was the piece of Beggar's Opera in Progressive Rock style on their fourth album Get Your Dog off Me! gecovert. Again and again the rumor that Eric Clapton has recorded a version of the play, but this was denied by Williams himself on the official website. This rumor was possibly due to the fact that on the composed by Marc Shaiman and Eric Clapton soundtrack to the film " The Story of Us " is also a recording of the piece can be heard - here it is, however, to the 1970 by Mason Williams recorded acoustic version.

The piece is also frequently heard in television series and films, such as in an episode of each series "The Simpsons ," " Frasier " and " Wild Palms ".

At the general election in 1976 put the FDP Classical Gas in its TV campaign spots.

Also published in 1976, the U.S. synthesizer pioneer Larry Fast on sequencers, his second published under the project name Synergy solo album, a cover version of " Classical Gas ". An early version of this title is also included on the UK release (but not the U.S. ) of his debut album Electronic Realizations For Rock Orchestra from 1975.
