Claudia Hempel

Claudia Hempel ( born September 25, 1958 in Merseburg, after marriage Claudia Thamke ) is a former swimming athlete from East Germany, which was founded in 1975 with the World Champion freestyle relay.

Hempel won 1972 at the Spartakiade in two contests, in 1973 she finished fourth in the 100 meters butterfly at the European Junior Championships. The swimmer from TSC Berlin triumphed at the East German championship in 1975 on both back stretching before Ulrike Richter and Ulrike Tauber. With the World Swimming Championships in 1975 Ulrike Richter swam in the medley relay. Claudia Hempel but struggled with the 4 x 100 meter freestyle relay in the cast Kornelia Ender, Hempel, Barbara Krause and Ute Brückner to the world title. 1976 Hempel concentrated entirely on the freestyle track, she finished in the GDR Championship over 100 meters in second place behind Kornelia Ender. At the 1976 Olympic Games she won the 100m freestyle and the 200m sixth to seventh place. With the 4 x 100 meter freestyle relay in the cast Kornelia Ender, Petra Priemer, Andrea Pollack and Claudia Hempel, she won the silver medal behind the U.S. season. In the same year she was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit in bronze.

Claudia Hempel studied sports at the DHfK and later worked as a trainer and as a sport and German teacher at the Cottbus sports school.

She is married to the team doctor of FC Energie Cottbus and has one child.
