Clemens Thoma

Clemens Thoma ( born November 2, 1932 in Kaltenbrunn in the canton of St. Gallen; † 7 December, 2011 Baar ZG) was a Swiss theologian and Divine Word Missionary. He was Professor Emeritus of Jewish Studies and Theology and founder of the Institute for Jewish-Christian Studies ( IJCF ) of the University of Lucerne.

Biography

Clemens Thoma grew up as one of eleven children in a peasant family in the canton of St. Gallen.

After theological studies in St. Augustin near Bonn and St. Gabriel in Vienna in 1961 was his ordination. At the University of Vienna, he studied under Kurt Schubert Judaism. In 1966, he put his dissertation AD, spiritual and religious significance for Judaism and Christianity, according to the statements of Jewish and Christian primary literature prior to the destruction of the Jerusalem Temple in 70.

From 1967 to 1971 he was assistant professor at the Institute for Jewish Studies at the University of Vienna. During this time he worked more with the question of anti-Judaism in the New Testament and began his involvement in Christian- Jewish dialogue.

In 1971 he was appointed as full professor at the Department of Jewish Studies and Biblical Studies College of Theology Lucerne. In 1972 he organized in Lucerne a first Judeo- Christian Symposium organized and in subsequent years, numerous symposia, conferences and meetings which were devoted to interfaith dialogue or the Judaeo-Christian research.

In 1981 he founded the Institute for Jewish-Christian Studies ( IJCF ), which he directed until his retirement in 2000 and is an integral part of the University of Lucerne today. Thoma pursued by the institute was founded two objectives:

As an expert in interreligious dialogue, he was consultant to the 1976 Vatican Commission for Religious Relations with the Jews and advised the Swiss Bishops' Conference regarding the Christian- Jewish dialogue. Thoma was the initiator of Theological Encyclopaedia which came out in 1977 and distinguished himself by numerous works and Editorial Boards. In 1994 he became chief editor of the Freiburg newsletter New Series, Magazine for Christian-Jewish encounter.
