Features

Butterfly

The wingspan of the butterfly is 17 to 26 millimeters. The basic color of all wings is predominantly gray-brown. On the fore wings there is a very clear, large, mostly elongated center. Near the hem, a red-brown band takes off, it fades with age. The brighter central area is bounded by dark horizontal lines. Directly at the hem is a layer formed from strokes dark line, which continues on the hind wings. These also show a somewhat weaker trained center and a transverse line extending from the some dark, inward wedge stains.

Egg

The oval egg is characterized by regular, large, hexagonal recesses on the shell sculpture.

Caterpillar

Similar Species

The spruce gall - Pug ( Eupithecia analogues ) is slightly smaller, lower-contrast drawn and differs in particular by significantly longer palps.

Geographical distribution and occurrence

The spruce cones - Pug occurs in many parts of Europe, but lacking in some Mediterranean regions. In the Alps, it is still found in 2800 meters above mean sea level. In Siberia, the Altai and Sayan Mountains, in East Asia and Japan is the ssp. E. abietaria debrunneata home. The type preferably inhabits spruce, fir, and mixed forests.

Way of life

The moths fly in one generation and are crepuscular and nocturnal. Main flight period are the months of May to July. Mostly they will stay in the treetops, but also appear to artificial light sources on the ground. The caterpillars are found in the majority from July to September and live in the journals of the commons Spruce ( Picea abies), the silver fir (Abies alba ) and other fir (Abies ) and pine species (Pinus ). From the food is also the scientific name of the species derives from the Latin language: abies = " fir ". The pupae overwinter.

Endangering

In Germany the Fichtenzapfen - Pug comes in all federal states in varying frequency and is run on the Red List of Threatened Species as not at risk.
