The Cluj Arena in Cluj- Napoca was built in 2009-2011, replacing the old Stadionul Ion Moina, which was from 1919 to 2008 home stadium of Universitatea Cluj and finally took 28,000 spectators, but no longer met the requirements of a modern stadium. On 20 November 2008 began with the demolition of the old stadium, in the spring of the following year the Ion Moina Stadium was demolished. A little later they began construction of the new Cluj Arena, on 16 July 2009 started the construction work. This lasted for two years, so that the new stadium was opened on 8 October 2011. During the construction period the team of Universitatea Cluj evaded in various other stages, including the Stadionul Clujana, where they played in the second division season 2009/10 and the Stadionul Victoria Chetatea in Alba Iulia, where games of League 1 2010/11 took place. At the beginning of the new Erstligasaison 2011/12 took advantage of the Stadionul Universitatea Cluj Gaz Metan Medias in the first four home games.

On 1 October 2011, the stadium was opened. During the opening ceremonies were held concerts of music groups Scorpions and Smokie and a friendly match against the Russian club FC Kuban Krasnodar. The game on October 16, 2011 against FC Brasov was the first league game in Cluj Arena.

The Cluj Arena has a capacity of 30 596 spectators. Thus, it is slightly larger than the previous stadium, at the place the arena was built. Behind the Arena Naţională in Bucharest, the Dan - Păltinişanu stadium in Timişoara and the Iftimie - Ilisei Stadium in Medgidia the fourth largest stadium in Romania and also in Cluj- Napoca, where even the Dr. Constantin Rădulescu Stadium of CFR Cluj which holds 23,500 spectators, is worth mentioning.

The name of the new stadium in Cluj- Napoca has long been not finally resolved. While initially the name Ion Moina Stadium was scheduled again supported the majority of the followers of Universitatea Cluj the name Mircea -Luca Stadium after a former player of the club. But was chosen the name Cluj Arena, where a sale of the naming rights of the stadium is planned to a group.
