Coat of arms of Canberra

The coat of arms of the Australian Capital Territory applies to the Australian Capital Territory as well as the capital Canberra.

History

The coat of arms was created by the Commonwealth Department of Home Affairs and Territories (Ministry of Internal Affairs and territories) in 1927. The Department of Defense wanted to decorate the this year spilled from the stack warship HMAS Canberra.

The Federal Capital Commission conducted a design competition for the new coat of arms. In April 1928, the winning design by CR Wylie was sent to London to have it checked by the College of Arms. The coat of arms was approved after minor changes on 8 October in 1928 and officially launched on 7 November 1928.

The coat of arms is also part of the flag of the Australian Capital Territory, which was introduced in 1993.

Description

In blue a silver three towers, crenellated castle closed portcullis over the schrage crossed a golden sword and a golden mace floats and a golden crown is on. Under the castle rotgebutzte a golden rose.

About the shield a blue -and-gold crest on a gold -winning portcullis in front of green tree.

Plate holder the right is a black rotgeschnäbelter Black Swan and left gelbgeschnäbelte white swan.

Under the shield of the English motto is in black capital letters "FOR THE KING, THE LAW, AND THE PEOPLE"

Symbolism

  • The crown symbolizes the authority of the Governor General.
  • The mace symbolizes the Australian Parliament
  • The sword stands for the Australian Defence Force
  • The castle has three towers, these represent the three powers (executive, legislative and judicial )
  • The white rose is the emblem of the Duke of York, who opened in 1927 the first Parliament building ( Old Parliament House)
  • The winning portcullis also symbolizes the Parliament; it is the traditional symbol of the Palace of Westminster, in which convenes the British Parliament
  • Behind the portcullis is to see a tree; it refers to the nickname of Canberra, " bush capital ".

The coat of arms carriers are a black Australian black swan and a white swan Australian, they represent the Aboriginal and European immigrants.
